Additives
Additives for PU raw materials are special substances that are mixed in during polyurethane production in order to achieve certain processing characteristics or product properties.
Common types of additives for polyurethanes for users and formulators:
- Catalysts
These accelerate the reaction between the polyol and isocyanate components resulting in a faster increase in viscosity, reaching of the gel point and final curing of the PU material.
- Retarders
In contrast to catalysts, retarders slow down the reaction. These are used to extend the processing time and adjust the increase in viscosity of the PU material. This is particularly useful when processing polyurethanes in injection moulding, in the production of foams and large components.
Additives for formulators:
- Colour pastes
To match the colour of the casting resin and the component or for aesthetic reasons. Colouring can be robustly achieved using pre-dispersed pigment even on the user's premises if desired.
- Antioxidants
These protect the PU material from oxidation and degradation by light, heat and oxygen. Antioxidants contribute to the stability and durability of polyurethanes.
- UV stabilisers
These prevent the PU material from degrading due to ultraviolet radiation. Especially important for outdoor applications these additives utilized where the material is exposed to sunlight.
- Flame retardants
These additives increase the fire safety of polyurethanes by slowing down the spread of flames and reduce smoke development.
- Plasticisers
Plasticisers improve the flexibility and elasticity of polyurethanes and are often used in applications such as sealants, coatings and plastics.
The selection and dosage of available additives depends on the specific application and the desired material properties. New additives are constantly being developed in the polyurethane industry to improve the performance and versatility of PU materials.
